Charumati Stupa is believed to have been built by princess Charumati who was one of the daughters of Emperor Ashoka. She is believed to have accompanied her father to Kathmandu along with his Buddhist missionary. During Devpala’s rule, Queen Charumati took active part in spreading Buddhism in the kingdom. After the king’s death, Charumati left the palace and became a Bhikkhuni. She had 500 Bhikkhunis with her at the time. She lived in a vihar named Charumati Vihar (which stills remains as a heritage in Chabahil) with the Bhikkhunis and is believed to have made Charumati Stupa nearby to pay homage to the Buddha.

Sri Charumati Buddha Vihar is situated in Chabahil. Kathmandu. It was established in 1998 by Ven. Bhikkhu Tapassi Dhamma thero. This vihara is at the western front of the historical Charurnati Stupa. The Vihara has currently more than 500 regular members who attend regular Buddha puja, Dhamma teachings, Buddhist celebrations, and other programs conduct. by the Valera.

Built by Emperor Ashoka’s Daughter | Charumaitri Stupa | Heritage Awareness Ceremony
The Charumaitri Stupa Heritage Awareness Ceremony 2025 was held at the historic Charumati Stupa in Chabahil, Kathmandu, Nepal one of the oldest Buddhist stupas in the region. Organized by Shree Charumaitri Buddha Bihar and supported by Charumaitri Healing Center Boudha, this event aimed to promote Buddhist heritage conservation, cultural awareness, and spiritual education. Led by Bhikkhu Tapassi Dhamma Thero, a respected monk with over 40 years of service to both Nepali and international Buddhist communities, the ceremony highlighted the ancient legacy of Princess Charumati, daughter of Emperor Ashoka, who built the stupa as part of her Buddhist mission in the Kathmandu Valley.
During restoration work, ancient relics including gold statues, coins, and a rare Ashokan-era brick with Dharmachakra symbols were discovered now preserved in Chhauni Museum. The Charumaitri Stupa, believed to predate the Bouddhanath Stupa, stands as a powerful symbol of peace, faith, and Nepalese Buddhist history. Chabahil 40 years ago lost Buddha statue 5th century statue

Buddha Statue This 37 inch tall statue of Buddha, which has been seen in the premises of the Chabahil Dhando Chaitya – Charumati Stupa since the fifth century, disappeared 40 years ago in July 1985, i.e. in the month of June 2042. This statue was standing in front of local houses. There were many attempts to steal this idol. But the efforts failed. Once, during a theft, this statue was large and heavy, so the thieves left it in the middle. The next morning, the statue was found hidden in a bush a few hundred meters away. The locals brought it back and replaced it where it was before. But, unfortunately, in July 1985 i.e. June 2042, this valuable ancient statue was stolen and lost forever. Let us all help to find this idol.
